The bin has a lid, and I was adding in paper goods, but it just wasn't enough to fill the BIG bin (one of those tall ones) on the curb! And every time I'd empty my little kitchen bin into the big one, it was an army of fruit flies! Eeew. That can't be good for the neighborhood...where do those things come from anyway?

I would LOVE to compost on my own and use the compost in my garden...someday.Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12548150437127473109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-48581159180650362612009-11-05T12:47:28.667-08:002009-11-05T12:47:28.667-08:00Sunset magazine has some great tips on the secrets...Sunset magazine has some great tips on the secrets to a perfect compost: http://www.sunset.com/garden/earth-friendly/secrets-perfect-compost-00400000011568/genevievehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04252558348810229591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-47094504310024674612009-11-05T12:32:49.847-08:002009-11-05T12:32:49.847-08:00Our cold climate in SF probably goes a long way to...Our cold climate in SF probably goes a long way to avoiding bugs and smells. But I would also make sure you have a recycling bin with a lid and that you're also mixing paper and other "dry goods" in with food scraps. They say to also avoid dairy and meat.MrsEmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11465853625720898199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-19500859405592244102009-11-05T12:04:54.923-08:002009-11-05T12:04:54.923-08:00Wow, that is so great.Wow, that is so great.Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15170332574247329301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-56991398351246126122009-11-05T11:27:55.711-08:002009-11-05T11:27:55.711-08:00I tried composting for a month or so, but none of ...I tried composting for a month or so, but none of my neighbors did it (I live in a 4-unit apartment building), and I was the only one putting food scraps in the big green "yard waste" bin. It was so stinky and attracted so many fruit flies that it just became too disgusting to bear (the big bin sits right next to my front stairs).

Sadly, I am no longer composting, but someday when I have my own place, I will.

Any suggestions for composting in an apartment building where nobody else is doing it and you don't want to create a big stinky mess?Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12548150437127473109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-83375542722461724042009-11-05T11:27:48.737-08:002009-11-05T11:27:48.737-08:00that is so cool! we should have that here on maui,...that is so cool! we should have that here on maui, but i think the critters would be too much to handle.Haley v.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15552497.post-77061168103027535152009-11-05T10:59:36.148-08:002009-11-05T10:59:36.148-08:00I need to get back on top of my composting. My compost pile went so long ignored during our weeks of rain that when I finally got out back to tend to it it was growing potato plants!Jessicahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16881407681016424407noreply@blogger.com
