I've been having such fun rediscovering old books with my Kindle and the Project Gutenberg library. My latest was the complete Anne of Green Gables series. I hadn't read it since childhood and didn't really remember anything about the books aside from "Canadian," "coastal" and "girl." They're quite fun. Light and easy, with lots of daydreaming and making jam. The quiet country life was a nice break from the reality of a busy city and startup job. I especially liked Anne of the Island where she goes to college and lives in a cozy cottage with friends and two porcelain dogs.
Now, on to Maisie Dobbs, from of your recommendations.
I'm so glad you mentioned this again! (I remembering you writing about it a few months ago...) My sister received a Kindle for Christmas and I was trying to tell her about free downloads for old books. Thank you!

I was so excited to find this free on the Kindle as well. I remember the Disney series which prompted me to read the entire set. It's so different reading them now.

ReplyDeleteOh, oh, oh! I am a terrible mystery snob--cutting your teeth on Dorothy Sayers will do that to you--and Maisie Dobbs is one of the only new series I love. I think you'll really enjoy it; it's all very moody and atmospheric and Winspear has a slight tendency towards that P.D. James-style obsession with what people are wearing (which I enjoy).
ReplyDeleteYou should read L. M. Montgomery's trilogy, the Emily books. The first one is called Emily of New Moon. I liked them even more than the Anne books
