When I used to have my own flower garden in San Luis Obispo, I celebrated May Day each year by making construction paper cone baskets and filling them with blossoms for a few co-workers and friends. Traditionally, you are supposed to anonymously leave these cone baskets on your neighbor's doorknob. I've been celebrating May Day each year on and off since I was a child. I remember that we once even had a May Pole when I was about 7 years old.
To make your own May day baskets: roll a piece of brightly colored paper into a cone and staple or tape it closed. Cut a 1" by 11" wide strip of paper to use as a handle and staple it on to the top of the cone. The handle needs to be long in order to fit on a doorknob. Write the name of the recipient on the cone and fill it with tissue paper and flowers. You can also decorate the cone with construction paper cut outs, ribbon or other items. Or if you can't quite get around to making a basket this year (like me!) try sending a corny May Day e-card instead.
